Philippians 2:1-4

Imitating Christ’s Humility
1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

  1. I believe that as I get to know God better through His word that I began to have a clearer view of who He is and much of my assumptions and wrong thinking of God continues to be removed. He is revealing to me who He is rather than me telling myself who I think He is. The most interesting thing has happened in the midst of this. As I began to see God more clearly I automatically start to see myself more clearly. It's as if in finding Him I find myself. I think it is in this space that I have been introduced to true humility. When I look at my self in light of God's unconditional love, grace, mercy, sovereignty, goodness, patience, compassion, kindness...this list could go on and on but you get the picture,I see myself as I truly am. I feel tiny compared to Him, I feel weak, I feel broken, but I also feel amazingly grateful that in all His awesomeness He would choose me. I have nothing of worth to offer Him but He wants me anyway. That truly humbles me because in light of how He loves me I realize there is no way I can love that way...at least not with out Him.

St. Bernard defines humility as, "A virtue by which a man knowing himself as he truly is, abases himself. Jesus Christ is the ultimate definition of Humility."
